Climate change and G-B

KARACHI:

Gilgit-Baltistan, known for its unique and diverse nature, is facing significant threats due to changing climate patterns. As responsible citizens, it is our duty to play our role in addressing these challenges and protecting our environment and communities. Here are some of the notable points in the context of climate change and global warming:

1) Climate Variability and Impact on Biodiversity: Climate is not static. It varies over time and space. Climate change results from growing concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs) due to human activities such as fossil fuel use and deforestation. Gilgit-Baltistan, with its high mountain ranges, glaciers and rivers is rich in biodiversity. However, climate change poses a serious threat to this delicate ecosystem. Loss of habitat, species extinction, reduced grasslands, pest attacks and increased glacial melting are common challenges faced by communities in the region.

2) Melting Glaciers and Flooding Risk: Rapidly melting glaciers in Gilgit-Baltistan raise concerns about severe flooding. The Himalayan glaciers are receding at an alarming rate due to climate change. As a major water catchment area for the Indus River Basin, Gilgit-Baltistan plays a crucial role in Pakistan’s hydroelectric and irrigation systems. Ensuring the resilience of this region is essential for sustainable development.

3) Gender-Responsive Climate Action: IUCN Pakistan has launched the Climate Change Gender Action Plan in Gilgit-Baltistan. This plan aims to strengthen the resilience of women and girls in the face of climate-related impacts. The plan focuses on priority sectors such as agriculture, forest and biodiversity, disaster risk reduction, water and sanitation, integrated coastal management and energy and transport.

4) Collaboration and Awareness: Government officials, civil society, local community-based organisations, academia and media must collaborate to address climate change. Public awareness campaigns and educational initiatives can empower communities to adopt sustainable practices and mitigate climate risks.

We must recognise the urgency of climate action in Gilgit-Baltistan. By implementing gender-responsive strategies, promoting sustainable practices and raising public awareness, we can safeguard our environment and ensure a better future for generations to come.
