The Sindh culture department has developed a digital library based on interoperable system, through which readers will be able to access over 100 million books, research journals and articles sourced from libraries across the world.
The library will be launched on Thursday and the initiative has been taken in line with Sindh High Court orders.
According to an official of the culture department, "the digital library comprises 40 per cent books in PDF format." He said that readers would be able to easily search and download books and other material from the digital platform. The official went on, "It is a treasure trove, where books are available in English, Sindhi and Urdu language."
Besides, the library comprises books on myriad subjects, including literature, music, history, science, archeology, culture, anthrophony, medicine, environment and Sufism, as well as biographies and cookbooks.
"We are going to upload around 5,000 to 7,000 books on the platform, but it will also connect readers to other libraries, portals and websites," the spokesperson for Sindh culture department told The Express Tribune.
Plus, the online platform is designed to also give readers access of the dictionaries of etymology, Cambridge and Urdu and Sindhi languages.
The digital library's website, which can be accessed at https://el.sindhculture.gov.pk/, also contains multimedia resources, open source database and e-journals. So it will allow users to access the UNESCO digital library, directories of open access journals, libraries of internet archives, Britannica, springer journals, wiki books, science open libraries, and other portals with just one click.
Talking to The Express Tribune, Sindh Culture Minister Sardar Shah said, "It was not just because of court orders, but we developed this library on the demand of the people of Sindh." He further stated that users would be able to register on the platform for free and the library could be accessed from all devices.
It is pertinent to mention here that the SHC had ordered the provincial government two months ago to set up a digital library in the province, during the hearing of a plea pertaining to the establishment of electronic libraries in Sindh.
