How to give yourself a facial at home

Give your skin some TLC in the comfort of your own home

March 01, 2021

Facials are one of the most relaxing things that you can do for yourself. But because of Covid-19 many of us are still hesitant to book appointments at our go-to salons. Right now is the time we need to take care of ourselves and de-stress more than ever. Luckily, it’s still possible to give yourself a spa-quality facial at home.

Relaxing atmosphere

Don’t be sad if you can’t actually go to the spa, you can bring the spa to you by creating a relaxing ambiance for yourself at home. This small step will have a major impact on your overall experience of pampering yourself at home. Start off by taking a bath with epsom salt. If you’re not in the mood for a full-body dip, you can soak your feet for the same de-stressing feeling. It’s very healthy and also relaxing all those pressure points in the feet. Try adding a few drops of lavender essential oil or any essential oil of your choice. Be sure to light a few of your favourite candles and put on a relaxing playlist of your choice.

Cleanse

Make sure you thoroughly clean your skin to remove any dirt or oil. Any make-up or product left on your skin will result in a less effective facial. To make sure your skin is as clean as possible before you start the facial process, give double cleansing a try. First use an oil-based cleanser which will help remove make-up, products, and sebum, while a water-based cleanser will clear your skin of any grime like dirt or sweat, leaving you with clean skin ready for next steps.

Steam

If you’re a facial enthusiast, you know that most facials will include some kind of steaming process. Depends entirely on personal preference. Steaming your face helps open up your pores and soften the top layer of your skin to prime it for exfoliation. If you want to steam your face at home, take extra care not to over-steam your skin, as this can lead to dryness. You can put your face some feet away from a bowl of hot water and cover your head with a towel to trap the steam in, or soak a towel in hot water and put it over your face, making sure the water isn’t hot enough to burn you.

Exfoliate

Any good facial involves exfoliation to get rid off dead skin cells and reveal radiant skin. Exfoliating with a peel creates a perfect canvas for the rest of your at-home facial. Exfoliation helps open your pores and smooth your skin’s texture. Massage a chemical or enzyme exfoliator into your skin, focusing on problem areas like your T-zone that may be oilier or have clogged pores.

Moisturise

Once you remove the mask, lock in the hydration with your favourite serum or moisturiser. To take your moisturising to the next level, you can use a facial massage tool like a jade roller or gua sha to help de-puff your face and for better circulation. Massage is actually very healthy for your facial muscle.
