PPP hopes to repeat history

MQM-P and PML-N join hands against PPP candidates in former president’s city

HYDRABAD:

The Pakistan Peoples Party, which has been ruling Sindh for 14 years, will defend its previous electoral wins in the local government institutions in all the 14 districts of Sindh's four divisions where the elections will be held on June 26 (today).

The candidates of Grand Democratic Alliance, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan and some other parties will take on the ruling party in the polls.

For the 422 seats of Larkana Municipal Corporation, two municipal committees, four town committees and 46 union councils, some 1,330 candidates are in the run. Two chairman of UCs and many chairmen of town committees, three members of district council and 10 councillors, all belonging to the PPP, have been elected unopposed in the district where the mausoleum of Bhuttos is located.

In the city of PPP's co-chairman and former president Asif Ali Zardari, Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz have joined hands to contest against the PPP's candidates. The GDA and PTI are also taking part in the polls.

As many as 163 candidates are running for the seats in 59 union councils of district council Shaheed Benazirabad while there are 337 contestants for the seats of municipal corporation Shaheed Benazirabad. In the district's eight town committees some 323 candidates are contesting the polls. The ECP has declared 81 polling stations as very sensitive and 160 as sensitive.

A total of 3,187 candidates are contending on different seats in four municipal committees, 11 town committees and 73 union councils of the district council in Sanghar district.

In Naushehro Feroze district, some 2,024 are taking part in the polls for the seats of two municipal committees, nine town committees and 68 union councils of the district council.

In Mirpurkhas, where the people will elect their representatives on the seats of 22 union committees of municipal corporation, 54 union councils of the district council and 69 wards of seven town committees, 54 candidates have been elected unopposed. Except four independent candidates, all the unopposed candidates belong to the PPP.

Likewise, as many as 1,501 contestants are running for 64 UCs of district council Tharparkar, 15 wards of municipal committee Mithi and 26 wards of six town committees.

The ECP has declared 195 polling stations in that desert-based district as very sensitive and 300 as sensitive.

In the neighbouring Umerkot district, 874 contestants are vying for 42 UCs of the district council, 14 wards of municipal committee Umerkot and 34 wards of seven town committees.
