After the release of the comedy-drama film Zero in 2018, the Dilwale star took a hiatus from work, reportedly to recuperate from previous setbacks.

Previously speaking at the World Government’s Summit in Dubai, he also shared his vision for the Indian film industry, saying, “I want to end my career, which is far from ending right now; I have a good 35 years to go. I want to make that film that the whole world likes, and then nobody on a big stage like this asks me, why haven’t you crossed over? That film should cross me over. That’s my dream.”

Dunki had the 13th-biggest advance booking of all time for a Hindi film. On its opening day, it collected a net total of US$3.5 million in India and US$7.3 million worldwide. As of 7 February 2024, Dunki has grossed US$33 million in India, with a further US$25 million overseas, for a worldwide total of US$59 million.

The 2023 film narrates the story of a group of friends attempting to fly abroad for better opportunities. However, facing visa rejections, they embark on a journey to cross borders illegally. Alongside Khan, the film features Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal, Boman Irani, and other talented actors.
