Plans by Daud Kim, a popular Korean Muslim YouTuber, to build a mosque on Yeongjong Island in South Korea’s Incheon were abruptly halted after a wave of negative reaction from local residents.
Kim, formerly known as Kim Jae-han, has garnered a large online following by sharing his experiences as a Muslim in Korea, with more than 5.52 million subscribers on YouTube and 3.5 million followers on Instagram.
His influence, however, was not enough to sway the sentiments of the local populace regarding his proposed religious site.
The land in question, measuring 284.4 square metres, was acquired for 189.2 million won (approximately $136,500).
Kim had initially paid a deposit of 20 million won and planned to settle the remainder the following month.
Following the backlash, both parties, Kim and the landowner, agreed to annul the contract, with the landowner citing unawareness of Kim’s intentions to construct a mosque on the site.
Kim has publicly addressed the issue through a video shared on his social media platforms, explaining the situation to his followers and expressing his concerns over the development.
