As the final instalment of Shahmeer and Shibra’s love story drew to a close last weekend, writer Abdul Khaliq Khan revealed he had plotlines that would keep Ishq Murshid going for another two seasons.

Speaking in a recent interview on Sal Ahmed’s YouTube channel, Khan said, “I have three stories in mind for this show. You’ve already seen the first one, where a boy overcomes obstacles to win his true love. The second story will be about a boy who jumps through many hoops for a close blood relation. And the final story will be about a love that transcends everything else – it is about how the ishq for Allah overtakes everything else.”

Shedding light on the inner workings of his writer’s mind, and how Ishq Murshid came to be, Khan explained it was important for him to be “obsessed” with his protagonists if he was to do their story justice. According to him, certain characters grabbed him from the get-go and compelled him to create their fictional world. Shameer/Fazal and Shibra, portrayed by Bilal Abbas and Durefishan Saleem, were two such examples.

“They are the nucleus of the show,” said Khan. Adding that he had a passion for writing youth-based romance, Khan expressed gratitude for the fans who have enjoyed his creations. “I am so glad that fans have liked the story so far.”

The highly anticipated season 1 finale of Ishq Murshid premiered in cinemas on Friday, with stars Abbas and Saleem in attendance in twinning white outfits. For those who did not attend the theatrical premiere, the show aired on television on Sunday. However, fans expecting a two-hour episode were left bitterly disappointed after one hour was devoted to just a recap of the show thus far. Venting out on social media, one fan wrote, “I feel sorry for the people who bought a cinema ticket to watch this.” Another equally frustrated commenter penned, “This whole episode was a flashback.”

With Khan having promised two more segments, fans may forgive the letdown of the season 1 finale and be prepared to welcome the show back when it returns to screens.
