Giancarlo Esposito, known for his chilling portrayal of Gus Fring in "Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul," has opened up about a dark period in his life prior to his iconic role. In a recent interview on Sirius XM's "Jim & Sam" show, Esposito revealed that in 2008, he was so financially desperate that he contemplated ending his life so that his children could benefit from his life insurance.
The actor, now a mainstay in major productions like "The Mandalorian" and "The Boys," was on the verge of bankruptcy when he began considering such drastic measures. The potential of providing for his four children was, tragically, his primary motivation. Thankfully, Esposito realised the lasting trauma this action would inflict on his family.
"The light at the end of the tunnel was 'Breaking Bad,'" Esposito recounted. His breakthrough role as Gus Fring would ultimately change his life and career trajectory forever.
With renewed success, Esposito has hinted at his interest in a Gus Fring prequel series. In a British GQ interview, he expressed a desire to explore the villain's backstory, suggesting a title like "The Rise of Gus."
