Escalating violence

It is imperative that those responsible for killings and destruction in Gaza are held accountable

April 23, 2024

The Israel-Palestine conflict has once again captured global attention, but not for reasons anyone would wish. The staggering toll of human lives lost and shattered demands urgent action and unwavering commitment to finding a just and lasting solution. With at least 34,151 Palestinian casualties, including over 14,500 innocent children, and more than 8,000 individuals missing, this conflict has evolved into a humanitarian catastrophe of unimaginable proportions.

Reports from the Gaza Health Ministry reveal a staggering toll of at least 54 lives lost in Israeli attacks within the past 24 hours alone. This includes innocent civilians, including children, whose lives have been tragically cut short amidst the ongoing conflict. The human suffering endured by Palestinians, compounded by years of political unrest and economic hardship, create an urgent need for a ceasefire and concerted efforts to de-escalate tensions. The recent resignation of Major-General Aharon Haliva, head of Israel’s military intelligence, following the tragic events in Gaza, has sparked a necessary conversation about accountability within Israel’s military leadership. While resignations can serve as a form of acknowledgment, they must not be the endpoint in addressing the profound human suffering and loss of life resulting from the conflict. It is imperative that those responsible for the indiscriminate killings and destruction in Gaza are held accountable under international law, and the most appropriate venue for this accountability is The Hague. Israel must immediately cease its disproportionate use of force and take meaningful steps to address the root causes of the conflict. The continued perpetration of atrocities against Palestinian civilians only serves to deepen the cycle of violence and hinder prospects for peace and stability in the region.

As the violence continues to escalate, it is imperative for the global community to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and call for an immediate end to the bloodshed. The suffering endured by Palestinians must not be overlooked or ignored, and concerted efforts must be made to address the underlying causes of the conflict and pave the way for a sustainable peace settlement.
